Spotlight: Quilting with Deimosa Webber-Bey
We are honored to welcome Deimosa Webber-Bey to Common Ground to share this powerful community quilting experience.
Over the course of three days together, we will complete a single quilt at the Common Ground Summit, with one quilting session per day. Deimosa will share her research on quilting during the era of slavery, as well as compare and contrast African American quilting, Native American quilting, and quilting in general.
These conversations will take place in circle, over the quilt, while we make it.
The co-creative process is simple and effective:
Day 1: Design
Meet the quilters and set intentions. Design and cut the “snowflake” pattern for a Hawaiian-style quilt. Baste the design on to the background fabric
Day 2: Construction
Quilters reconvene for day two and applique the snowflake pattern to the background. Back, batting, and turn the quilt.
Day 3: Quilting
Participants reconvene to complete “echo quilting” or tie the quilt—or both! Quilt is presented and displayed at final Summit dinner for all to enjoy.
The activity will leave plenty of space for attendees to attend other sessions each day.
Each session, any attendees present will work together to further progress on the quilt.
No sewing skills required!
